Head in the Clouds

Sale price£35.00

Head in the Clouds explores the tension between our true selves and the external pressures created by social media, false media, and consumption-driven industries. The central, enlarged figure represents the massive industries—media giants, corporations, and advertising—that profit from our insecurities and distractions. Her ‘perfect’ body represents the “false ideal” reflecting the inflated, unattainable standards these industries promote, shaping our perceptions of beauty, success, and self-worth. The oversized figure speaks to the overwhelming presence of these forces, which loom large in our lives, constantly pushing us to compare ourselves to curated, idealised versions of others.
There is an oily residue in the sea, which symbolizes the pervasive control of the energy industries and their environmental and societal impact, which often goes unnoticed in our everyday lives. This residue visible around the feet and forefront of the ripples, represents the subtle yet constant influence these industries have on our collective psyche. Though it may appear unnoticed, it is always there—corrosive, insidious, and ever-present. Just like the energy sector’s environmental and societal toll, this residue reflects the invisible, ongoing impact of these forces, shaping our world in ways that are difficult to escape or fully comprehend.
The cloud in the painting represents the distractions we willingly embrace—social media feeds, advertisements, and false portrayals of life—that impairs our judgment and keep us from focusing on our true selves. These distractions prevent us from confronting our deeper truths, encouraging endless comparisons and reinforcing the illusion of perfection. The cloud symbolizes the fog we enter to escape the discomfort of self-reflection, but it only perpetuates disconnection and self-doubt.
Head in the Clouds urges viewers to question how much of their true selves have been shaped or distorted by these forces and to reconsider the cost of consuming these illusions. It’s a call to strip away the layers and reclaim authenticity in a world increasingly dominated by ideals that don’t reflect who we truly are.
